According to many studies, research has shown gum disease (periodontal disease) to be linked to various diseases. It has shown to be linked to diabetes, heart disease, respiratory diseases, kidney, pancreatic and blood cancers. Chronic inflammation from periodontal disease can lead to a compromised immune system; bacteria in the mouth can be released into the bloodstream, increasing the risk of additional health programs.
Alternately, those who suffer from chronic inflammation originating elsewhere in their bodies may experience problems with their dental health. An example of this: The Oral Health Journal in October 2012 stated that those with a BMI over 25 (overweight) are more likely to have bleeding gums and oral infections. The reason? Inflammation. The secretion of inflammatory chemicals from fat deposits. This is released constantly into the body, resulting in infection.
What to do?
Make healthy choices for your overall health: Talk with your physician and follow medical advice, exercise, eat a well balanced diet and reduce processed foods and sugars to reduce inflammation.
Step up your Oral Hygiene care at home. The average adult brushes for 45 seconds vs the recommended 2 minutes. You may find using a power toothbrush with a built-in timer to be very helpful with this. We recommend Revolation, Oral B Braun, or Philips Sonicare electric toothbrushes. Use floss or flossers, or cleaners made for in-between the teeth. An addition of a water pick and special oral rinse and toothpaste can also help.
